The Extraordinary Family

The Symington Family Estates, family business currently being run by the 4th and the 5th generation, are the leading vineyard owners in the Douro Valley in Portugal in possession of 2,400 hectares of land with over 1,000 planted with vines. The estates are also often described as being a ‘Port empire’ from owning many port brands. Over 70% of Symington brands’ port wine is produced from grapes grown on their own properties.

Valuing respect, passion, excellence, stewardship and leadership, the Symingtons have the mission ‘to produce exceptional ports and wines that celebrate and preserve the uniqueness of Portugal’. Constantly improving, they brought in innovative vineyard management and vinification methods and hope to become a more sustainable wine company in the future while continuing carrying on the tradition started by Andrew James Symington in 1882. Cabernet Sauvignon 1987, the first ‘premium’ wine to be exported from Chile, was a mould-breaker: a brand synonymous with premium quality that raised the bar for other Chilean producers. The first Chilean ‘ultra-premium’ followed: Montes Alpha ‘M’ (Bordeaux style); then Montes Folly in 2000 (pure Syrah); and lastly, Purple Angel (perfect example of Chilean Carmenère), in 2005.

Two of its major brands are Prats & Symington (P+S) and Warre’s. P+S was founded by Bruno Prats, former owner of Cos d'Estournel and the Symington Family Estates in 1999 while Warre’s is one of the oldest brands of Port, with almost 350 years of history, frequently grace the table at Royal banquets in the UK.
