    The Modern Side of Barolo

    Barolo is the most profound expression of Nebbiolo, the noble grape of Italy. It used to require years to develop before it shows beautifully. Thanks to developments in both vineyard and winery, Modernist Barolos are less austere and ready to drink earlier. In the winery, fermentation takes place over a shorter period, and wine is aged in barriques, like most of the world’s top reds, rather than large casks. There’s also a greater focus on terroir, with single vineyard bottlings. Some of the region’s top slopes, such as Brunate and Rocche, have subsequently gained “Grand Cru” status.
