The bastion of Penfolds’ “house style” with assertive, cedary American oak across intense cabernet sauvignon, sitting in the blackcurrant, blackberry and mulberry zone. Follows suit on the palate with the same black-fruit core, swathed in new-oak, sweet spices. Long, sweetly ripe tannins. A blend of McLaren vale, Coonawarra, Barossa Valley and Padthaway grapes, matured in 100% new American-oak hogsheads. JS

Scents of vanilla, cedar and celery seed seamlessly swirl around dark notions of cassis, plum, coffee and cocoa. There's a touch of mint, but it fits well within the context of the wine. Full-bodied, concentrated and rich, this wine looks to have at least two decades ahead of it. The finish is truly special, with beguiling hints of maple syrup balanced by a smooth, enveloping wash of softly dusty tannins. RP

Aged in American oak, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Bin 707 stands out for its bold aromas of vanilla, tobacco and cassis. This year, it's close to 40% each from Coonawarra and McLaren Vale, with smaller proportions from Barossa Valley and the Adelaide Hills. It's full-bodied and rich, with a velvety mouthfeel, great intensity and super length. Yes, it's embryonic, but it's not unapproachable, much like any other high-quality New World Cabernet these days, with the ability to age for two decades or more. RP

This has a very expressive and intense feel with assertive, 100% new American oak, sitting in a bold, spicy layer with vanilla, bourbon and espresso notes, across the blueberries, blackcurrants and boysenberries. The palate has a very taut yet luscious delivery of rich plum and cranberry flavors. There’s such long and taut tannin and oak is driving this into tightly compressed shape with roasted-coffee tones to the very intense and long, ripe plums and black cherries. Powerful, commanding cabernet. This is a great Bin 707. JS
