Britain is great, in many aspects, including sparkling wines today. The British fizz is made in exactly the same way as Champagne across the English Channel, from the vineyards in southeastern England with very similar chalky soils. Recent studies even showed that the English invented the traditional method in 1662, decades before the French monk Dom Pérignon.

Planted with the Champagne trio – Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Meunier, the most important terroirs of English sparkling wine are located in Kent, Sussex and Hampshire. Climate change may pave the way for its rise, and foreign investments like Taittinger and Pommery from Champagne, and Jackson Family Wines from California, will further push the quality level higher than before.
