An archetype of the Coonawarra idiom and a classic in the making, this Malleea is 55% cabernet sauvignon, 45% shiraz. The fruit is sourced from the oldest vines, abstemiously selected. The extraction is gentle and it shows, with finely tuned tannins framing and drawing up the saliva, forcing one to reach for another glass as waves of black currant, bitter chocolate and a hint of pimento waft across the strident, creamy finish. Aromas of fresh and wild herbs, elderberries and black cherries. Medium- to full-bodied with silky tannins. Nicely balanced with a smooth texture and a solid core of red and black fruit. Good depth, too. jS
